Franchised vs. company-owned

Almost every Burger King is run by a franchisee. RBI says more than 95% of its restaurants across all its brands are franchised. In 2024 RBI bought Carrols Restaurant Group, Burger King’s biggest U.S. franchisee; it ran 950 U.S. Burger Kings as of September 30, 2026 and plans to sell most of them back to franchisees. Because franchisees set their own prices and hours, a Whopper can cost several dollars more in one city than another; see Burger King prices by city.

Where are Burger King restaurants?

Burger Kings are found in every U.S. state, from big cities to highway exits. For this site we checked one restaurant in each of 48 cities, from Anchorage and Honolulu to Miami, Boston and Seattle, and looked up the hours of 912 restaurants near them. Outside North America, Burger King is one of the biggest international burger chains, with restaurants across Latin America, Europe, Asia, the Middle East and Australia, where it operates as Hungry Jack’s.

  • Drive-thru restaurants: the most common format; 95% of the restaurants we looked up had a drive-thru.
  • Remodeled restaurants: Burger King is remodeling and relocating restaurants under its multi-year “Reclaim the Flame” plan, which RBI says includes up to $550 million for remodels, technology, kitchen equipment and building upgrades.
